Paging Indiana Jones
Indiana Jones is still getting mail. (University of Chicago admissions department)
Last week, a mysterious package arrived at the University of Chicago. Addressed to Henry Walton Jones Jr., the brown-paper-wrapped package featured Egyptian postage and was tied with old-fashioned string. At first, the University's admissions department didn't know what to make of it?there was no Henry Jones on staff. But then a movie buff pointed out that that's the name of the great (and fictional) archaeologist, Dr. Indiana Jones.
So, why the heck was Indiana "Don't call me Junior" Jones getting mail at the University of Chicago? It turns out the package was actually a replica of a journal written by "Raiders of the Lost Ark" character Abner Ravenwood. This particular replica was created by a "Raiders" enthusiast who then sold it online. Apparently the journal fell out of its box at some point (it was supposed to go to a buyer in Italy), and the mail service assumed the decorative package was the real thing. (In the films, Jones attended the University of Chicago, where he met Ravenwood.)
The department's Tumblr account described the book/prop's craftsmanship: "The book itself is a bit dusty, and the cover is teal fabric with a red velvet spine, with weathered inserts and many postcards/pictures of Marion Ravenwood (and some cool old replica money) included. It's clear that it is mostly, but not completely handmade, as although the included paper is weathered all of the 'handwriting' and calligraphy lacks the telltale pressure marks of actual handwriting."
Also included: photos of stars Harrison Ford and Karen Allen (who played Marion Ravenwood, Abner's daughter), maps and a host of other Indiana Jones treasures. University spokesman Garrett Brinker said the props usually sell for around $200. "Apparently, it takes [the creator] two weeks to make one of these replicas, and then he sells them to people all over the world," he said.
Oddly, the package was delivered even though it had no real postage. The stamps were photo-copied replicas. We like to think the U.S. Postal Service could tell the? fate of the Ark of the Covenant was hanging in the balance. And we can't let the Nazis get it now, can we?

Iran defiant on enrichment ahead of possible nuclear talks
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will not stop higher-grade enrichment of uranium in response to external demands, Tehran's top nuclear official was quoted as saying on Tuesday, signaling a tough bargaining stance ahead of planned new talks with world powers.
Western powers want Iran to halt enrichment of uranium to a fissile concentration of 20 percent as it represents a significant step closer to the level that would be required to make nuclear bombs. Iran says it needs uranium refined to 20 percent to run its medical research reactor in Tehran.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran will not suspend 20 percent uranium enrichment because of the demands of others," said Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA). "The Islamic Republic of Iran will produce 20 percent enriched uranium to meet its needs and for however long it is required."
He did not specify what he meant by Iran's needs. Western diplomats say Iran already has produced sufficient quantities to fuel its Tehran Research Reactor for several years. Abbasi-Davani has in the past said Iran plans to build another research reactor.
"Twenty percent enrichment is the right of the Iranian nation for use in the Tehran reactor and it will defend this right with authority," Abbasi-Davani said.
His comments renewed Iranian defiance in negotiations with world powers that are expected to resume soon, aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the decade-old dispute over Tehran's nuclear ambitions. But he did not appear to categorically rule out that Tehran at some point could shelve the activity.

Superior Replacements to the Boring Stock iPhone Apps [IPhone Downloads]
With every iteration of iOS, Apple tweaks their software a little, but for the most part, the default lineup of apps remains unchanged since launch. For a lot of us, these apps just aren't cutting it anymore. Here are the best app to replace them.
The design and function of many of Apple's apps is beginning to feel a bit stale, and many people are growing dissatisified with the experience as a whole. On top of that, many of the apps lock you into Apple's data ecosystem and iCloud. However, plenty of superior replacements exist for Apple's stock apps. From Maps to Notes, we've got you covered regardless of where you're looking for better options.
Application to avoid: Maps
Indictment: Apple's new Maps app has been getting its fair share of bad press lately for numerous mistakes ranging from poorly updated maps, to badly implemented search. Thankfully, you have a few really solid alternative choices.
Superior Alternative(s): Waze, MapQuest, Google Maps (in browser).
Notes: Replacing Apple's Maps app really depends on what you're looking for in a maps app. If turn-by-turn navigation is your thing, then Waze is the best of the free apps that provides it.
However, Waze isn't that great as a simple map. For that, we like Mapquest. Even though the ads in the app are rather annoying, it's a simple way to get a top-down view of an area you might already know so you can become more self-reliant in your city. If you'd rather just return to Google, the mobile version of Google Maps works just fine.
Application to avoid: Safari
Indictment: On its own, Safari is by no means a bad browser. However, to get its best feature, iCloud syncing, you have to use Safari on your Mac. Not everyone wants to do that. Safari also has it's fair share of usability issues, like the inability to quickly swap to private browsing, and a limited amount of tabs you can keep open at a time.
Superior Alternative(s): Chrome, Dolphin
Notes: Picking the perfect browser for your phone really depends on what you use on your computer. If you're a Chrome user on your desktop, then Chrome is the logical choice on your iPhone or iPad. It syncs up your history, bookmarks, autofill settings, and everything else across every single device.
If you'd like a browsing experience geared specifically to mobile, Dolphin is a gesture-based browser that offers a fun alternative way to browse the web.
Application to avoid: Camera
Indictment: Apple's default camera is pretty boring. You can't really tweak your photos, and you don't get standard options like a timer or burst mode. As a straightforward point-and-shoot camera it works fine, but if you want more precision you need to dig deeper.
Superior Alternative(s): Camera+, Camera Awesome.
Notes: Camera+ is easily the most full featured of the iPhone camera apps. Not only does it replicate everything the iPhone's default camera does, it also offers a ton of built-in photo editing tools, filters, and features. You can also lock the focus, set up timers, and shoot in a burst mode for action shots.
For another similar option, we like Camera Awesome, which offers many of the same features as Camera+, but also includes a number of guides to help you take better pictures. Both are great camera apps that supercharge everything great about the iPhone's camera. However, neither do HDR photography, so if HDR is your thing, you'll want to keep the stock camera on hand.
Application to avoid: Calendar
Indictment: Much like the Camera app, Calendar is pretty barebones in its functionality. It's not hard to use, but you can't customize the look of it to really suit your specific needs, and overall it's a bit hard to see what's really going on with your calendar.
Superior Alternative(s): Week Cal, Cue, Agenda Calendar.
Notes: You have a ton of options for calendar apps on the iPhone. For a full-featured replacement, we like Week Cal because it does pretty much everything you'd ever want in a calendar. However, for a completely different experience, Cue makes your calendar more of a social experience and works great for people with more social dates than work ones. For a minimalist experience, Agenda Calendar is a simple, but still useful alternative to Calendar.
Application to avoid: Mail
Indictment: Mail is made to work well with Apple addresses, but if you're using Gmail it doesn't have a lot of the very simple, but much needed capabilities built directly into Google's email app.
Superior Alternative(s): Sparrow
Notes: If you use Gmail for your email, then the Apple Mail app is pretty lackluster. Sparrow gives you control over your Gmail with access to labels, starred emails, and plenty more. The newest version of Mail in iOS 6 isn't bad if you're not using Gmail, but if you are, Sparrow's the right choice.
Application to avoid: Contacts
Indictment: On its own, the Contacts app isn't much more than a digital replacement for pen and paper. You get basic information, and the new Facebook integration helps keep that information up to date, but that's about it.
Superior Alternative(s): Smartr Contacts
Notes: Smartr turns all of your social contacts into an address book. Instead of simply seeing a phone number or email, you get recent Facebook or Twitter updates. This way, you can see a complete history of your contact with someone, which provides welcome context for those people you don't talk to often.
Application to avoid: Messages and Phone
Indictment: For the bulk of iPhone users, Messages and Phone are perfectly fine and works as well as Phone and SMS apps possibly could. However, not everyone wants to use their carrier's phone and messages services.
Superior Alternative(s): Google Voice, biteSMS.
Notes: If you don't have a lot of minutes through your cell phone carrier, then Google Voice provides a great replacement. With a few tweaks you can make the experience as seamless as the standard Phone and Messages apps.
For jailbreakers, we like biteSMS because it makes sending and receiving text messages a heck of a lot easier. It offers a lot of great features like Quick Reply, contact pictures, and tons more.
Application to avoid: iCloud
Indictment: Okay, so iCloud isn't an app as much as it's a service, but it's built into every Apple app (and many third-party apps) and comes stock with every device. iCloud is great if you happen to use all Apple products. However, the fact that it's difficult to pull documents from it, and you can't share easily them, makes it a pain to use for anything more than a simple backup.
Superior Alternative(s): Dropbox and Google.
Notes: We love Dropbox for storing all your files, and since most productivity apps (and plenty others) support Dropbox directly it's an obvious choice as an iCloud replacement for transferring files. Dropbox gives you direct access to every file you make across any device (including photos), and you're not restricted to Apple's apps. While iCloud is great to backup your phone, it's not good for much else.
As for keeping everything else in sync (like contacts, email, calendars, etc) you can set up everything to sync with your Google account easily. The benefit is that you have access to your data regardless of where you are (or if you're on a Mac). You can push that integration further with all your files with the Google Drive app as well.
Application to avoid: Find My iPhone
Indictment: As we learned with Mat Honan's hack earlier this year, the helpful features of the Find My iPhone app can easily be used for evil.
Superior Alternative(s): Prey.
Notes: Prey doesn't have all the same features of Find My iPhone, but that's also part of the appeal. It'll help you find your phone, but you won't be able to erase data, or change any settings. If the Mat Honan hack makes you a little wary to use Find My iPhone, then Prey is an excellent alternative.
Application to avoid: iBooks
Indictment: Out of all of Apple's iPhone apps, iBooks is the biggest offender of skeuomorphic design. It makes reading look like a book, and that just feels weird on a digital device.
Superior Alternative(s): Kindle.
Notes: The Kindle app is very simple, but it works really well for reading. You get all types of settings for brightness and fonts to make the reading experience better. Also, your bookmarks are synced across every device you can access the Kindle on. The nice part is you get text on a page and that's it. No weird formatting, and no book-style overlay.
Application to avoid: YouTube
Indictment: YouTube isn't packed into iOS 6, but if you're not upgrading to the new operating system, then you're stuck with a pretty ancient YouTube player that doesn't do much but play videos.
Superior Alternative(s): Jasmine, YouTube.
Notes: The official YouTube app is just fine for most people who want to watch a video now and again, but Jasmine really nails the experience. Jasmine is easy to use, and you can do everything you can on a desktop from within the app.
Application to avoid: Voice Memos
Indictment: Voice Memos is an incredibly simple app that can record audio, and then share that audio over Email, Messages, or in iTunes. While it works okay, its functionality stops there.
Superior Alternative(s): Audio Memos, Evernote.
Notes: Audio Memos is great because it syncs up across Dropbox, Evernote, and FTP. It also has handy features like a lock code, the ability to link recordings together, and more. If you're a hardcore Evernote user, the Evernote app also features recording options that link directly into your Evernote account.
Application to avoid: Notes
Indictment: Notes is about as simple as it gets. It's a writing pad that syncs with iCloud. Not everyone likes iCloud, and a lot of people aren't fans of the ruled notebook appearance of Notes.
Superior Alternative(s): Simplenote, Drafts,
Notes: Depending on what you use Notes for, you have a couple of solid options. We're huge fans of Simplenote because it makes syncing your notes across a variety of devices simple. It's also a nice, minimalist writing environment with just a blank page and a spot for text. If you want the ability to organize those notes into different services, Drafts speeds up the process and lets you quickly jot down a note, and then send it off to a variety of different services.
Application to avoid: Reminders
Indictment: Reminders is an exceptionally cool to-do list app that uses geo-fencing to remind you to do tasks when you're in a specific location. Unfortunately, they're not particularly easy to set up and the Reminders app doesn't come with a lot of options.
Superior Alternative(s): Checkmark
Notes: The nice thing about Checkmark is that it's dead simple to use. Three taps and you have a location-based reminder. You don't need to futz about in menus or anything else. Checkmark also works just like Apple's Reminders app. When you're in a certain area, you'll get a notification reminding you to do something. As a trigger to get things done, it works remarkably well and is much easier to use than Reminders.
Application to avoid: Music
Indictment: Until iOS 6, the Music app hadn't been updated or changed since it first launched. Now, it's a little slicker looking, but it's still the same experience.
Superior Alternative(s): Panamp, Groove 2, Track 8.
Notes: Depending on what you want from a music player, you have a few different choices. Panamp is a much faster experience than Music, and even though it hasn't been updated in a while it's still a slick, easy-to-use experience. Track 8 is another visual overhaul, but it's definitely a better option for anyone looking for a more visual player. If you're not happy with Music's boring playlist creation, then Groove 2 does it all for you automatically. Groove 2 creates smart, interesting playlists on the fly, and does a much better job of choosing music than Music.
Application to avoid: Podcasts
Indictment: When Apple released its Podcasts app, it pulled those podcasts out of the default Music app and stuffed them inside an ill-fitting, counter-intuitive container. The Podcasts app's best feature is the fact it auto-downloads new podcasts, but it's not very easy to use, has an overly-complicated menu, and isn't the prettiest thing to look at.
Superior Alternative(s): Downcast, Podcaster.
Notes: Downcast does everything the Podcasts app does, and it does it much better. You can also use it to create customized playlists, and turn your podcasts into your own radio station. If you'd prefer a podcast app that functions about the same as the old Music app, then Podcaster does the trick.
Application to avoid: Stocks
Indictment: Stocks is great for quickly glancing at a few stock prices, but it doesn't have enough options to fully track your portfolios, or take an in-depth look at the stocks you're investing in.
Superior Alternative(s): Stockwatch, Bloomberg
Notes: If you need more than just a glancing info at your stocks, then both Stockwatch and the Bloomberg app provide all types of customizable information. You can create your own tickers, track stocks, and plenty more. You don't get the option for the stock ticker in Notification Center, but at least you'll get more useful information.
Application to avoid: Weather
Indictment: The default Weather app is fine for quickly glancing at the current temperature and looking at the upcoming forecast, but its usefulness stops there. You can't get an in-depth look at incoming weather, nor can you see otherwise common calculations like wind, or "feels like."
Superior Alternative(s): The Weather Channel, AccuWeather, Weather Underground.
Notes: It's not hard to find a weather app in the App Store, but the big ones made by the Weather Channel, AccuWeather, and Weather Underground are the most feature-rich for most people. All of these apps give you access to full five day forecasts, up to the minute data, and pretty much everything else you'll ever need.
Application to avoid: Calculator
Indictment: For most people, the default Calculator app is perfect for a quick calculation, and the added scientific calculator in landscape mode fills in the gaps for most people. But if you need features like graphing, you'll have to head into the App Store.
Superior Alternative(s): QuickGraph.
Notes: You have a lot of options for graphing calculators in the App Store, but QuickGraph is on the coolest of the free options. On top of normal calculator functions, you also get 2D and 3D plotting, a library of equations, photo library saving, and plenty more.
Application to avoid: Videos
Indictment: The only real problem with the Videos app is that its playback is limited to just a few different formats. If you download a lot of videos in a variety of formats, Videos simply doesn't do the trick.
Superior Alternative(s): GoodPlayer
Notes: GoodPlayer can handle a ton of different formats (way too many to list here). It's also a perfectly functional video player that does everything you'd expect, including subtitles, cropping, mirroring, and more. That said, the stock Videos app has access to decoders the other video apps don't and can often play in higher definition.
Obviously you don't need to go through and replace every stock Apple app on your homescreen, but if you're looking for more function out of your phone, you'll need to replace at least a few of them.

Western secularism underlies the worldwide economic crisis and challenges the future of Ukraine, the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church has told Canada?s bishops.
?The current economic crisis is merely the symptom of a much deeper spiritual and cultural crisis,? Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk said at the annual plenary of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops. ?As western society rejects old moral structures and values, it finds that its moral GPS has no fixed and stationary points of reference.?
Archbishop Shevchuk said the Church must find ?new courage? to proclaim the truth of the Gospel to contemporary society to provide ?an anchor and compass?.
?We live in societies where virtue and goodness are frequently a veneer for religious intolerance, personal gratification and moral decay,? he said. ?Secularism would like us to be closed in a little box of Sunday worship.?
The former Soviet Union used that approach to religion, he said.
?Separation of Church and state has become separation of faith values from society, yet our mission is to preach the word of God to all and to be a constant sign of God?s loving presence through social ministry,? he said. ?Let us not be afraid of the totalitarianism of political correctness and speak the truth regardless of whom we might offend, whether it is on same-sex marriage or on the genocide of abortion.?
He recalled that, under Communism, the Church witnessed ?in the catacombs? as well in in open defiance to the regime.
?So many martyrs and confessors have suffered for the faith in the last century. Let their example and witness be an inspiration for all of us,? Archbishop Shevchuk said.
Ukraine is experiencing social and economic challenges and has changed dramatically, even in the last five years, he said. The country seems ?torn between old influences and new attempts to integrate with the broader European community?.
Contemporary Ukrainian society mistrusts government, politicians and civil institutions, but the Church, especially the Ukrainian Catholic Church, ?holds great moral authority?.
?The majority of Ukrainian citizens do not identify with any of the existing churches, but have a hunger for God and are open to the missionary work of the Church,? he said. ?In such circumstances the experience of new evangelization, which we are gradually acquiring, may become a precious treasure, which we would hope to share with the entire Catholic Church.?
The Ukrainian Catholic Church is marking the 100th anniversary of the arrival of her first bishop in Canada. Archbishop Shevchuk had presided at Synod of Bishops for the worldwide Ukrainian Catholic Church in Winnipeg, and he thanked the Canadian Catholic bishops for their ?fraternal spirit of cooperation?.
?My brother bishops here in Canada speak highly of this body and greatly appreciate the support and understanding our Church receives throughout Canada,? he said. ?This is not the case in other parts of the world.?
?Today there are tens of thousands of migrant workers from Ukraine in several European countries,? he said. ?That is why it is so important for us to share in your Canadian experience worldwide, testifying that the presence of the Eastern churches, with their traditions and structures, is not a threat but a richness of the Catholic community, which is unity in diversity.?

NHL lockout could mean happy returns for ticket ... - Financial Post
There?s not much that could convince me to become a Toronto Maple Leafs fan ? except maybe a 5% return.
A diehard Buffalo Sabres fan, I received notice from my team this month that in the event of a labour dispute in the National Hockey League I could get a refund on my purchased tickets. The players have been locked out since last week.
My beloved Sabres, who are owned by a billionaire, said if I let them hold onto my money they would pay me annual interest of 4%, which would start accruing after the games I purchased were cancelled.
Much to my chagrin, the Leafs are offering an even better rate to their season ticket holders.
?Leafs season ticket holders have an option: They can choose to be refunded monthly, should games be cancelled, and receive 1% interest, or they can leave their money on account where they will earn 5% interest,? said Pat Park, director of media relations with the team.
Across the NHL, it seems fans are being presented with this magical investment opportunity ? to get a return on their funds that any pension fund manager would be happy to accept.
The Vancouver Canucks are offering up to 3%. Likewise for the Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens. The Edmonton Oilers might be checking out hockey rinks in Seattle for a new location but for now their fans will be getting a 4% return on their money.
But nothing beats the cash being handed out south of the border where reports have circulated that have both the Florida Panthers and Minnesota Wild offering a meaty 10% return for fans if they let their cash ride with the team.
The money on file, with the accumulated interest, is eventually used to pay for future tickets ? assuming they play hockey again.
We hope it?s a short lockout so we don?t spend our time and energy refunding a game here and a game there
So why are the teams offering a rate of return I can?t possibly get on a guaranteed income certificate? For the most part it seems to be goodwill but also the hassle of returning all that money.
?We have had tremendous fan support since the start of our franchise,? said Aaron Sickman, a spokesman for the Minnesota Wild. ?They?ve been coming back to us in droves and we want to encourage our fans to keep their money with us. We hope it?s a short lockout so we don?t spend our time and energy refunding a game here and a game there.?
Marc Ganis, a sports consultant and president of Chicago-based SportsCorp Ltd., laughs when I tell I?m thinking of getting Wild season?s tickets and betting on a prolonged strike. ?That?s pretty impressive,? he says, about the 10% rate, adding the risk is probably minimal because he can?t remember the last time ticket holders lost their money because of a bankrupt franchise.
Mr. Ganis says the administration cost of refunding tickets is one reason why teams will pay interest to keep fans but he said the high rate might be seen as positive indicator the delay may be short. ?By doing this, it?s not a lot of money and it looks good on them,? he says. ?For this type of interest, I?d let the money roll.?
Certified financial planner Ted Rechtshaffen says it probably makes sense to leave your money with the team, if you know you are coming back to hockey when the labour dispute is over. ?The bottom line is do you want your money or do you know you are going to buying the tickets anyway, then it?s gravy,? says Mr. Rechtshaffen.
Of course, all of this is based on the premise that the underlying tickets were a worthwhile investment to begin with. ?If I was advising someone, I?d say 10% interest is great but then you turn that money into $150 hockey tickets which may or may not be the best investment,? he says. ?It?s only 10% on money that is 100% committed to buying hockey tickets.?
Maybe it?s time to just forget about buying hockey tickets. That might be the best investment I ever make.

Joining the Traffic Accident Law Center proved to be an eye opener to how different law school is to the practicability and functionality of a law firm. At the Traffic Accident Law Center, client relations is a top priority. The moment the client meets with one of the attorneys, the focus is on the client?s individual well being and needs. The Traffic Accident Law Center provides clients with a fundamental understanding of their rights, how the law applicable to their case, and what options they have. Law School on the other hand prepared me to apply facts to a set of rules that did not include actual people and their individual needs.
In law school, I received instruction on various legal doctrines that at the time were distinct from one another. I quickly learned at the Traffic Accident Law Center that those very distinct legal doctrines are often intertwined and used daily. Personal injury claims are more complicated then I anticipated and frequently require a combination of legal doctrines unique to each individual case. The Traffic Accident Law Center takes a look at the various aspects of a case, the attorneys take the time to plainly explain the client?s rights without the Latin, legal jargon taught in Law School. I see with experience, I will be able to outline the steps needed to successfully resolve a client?s claim from the outset. He estimated a daily average of 25 civilians killed and 100 wounded since the city became a major battleground between troops and rebels on July 20.
Hospital volunteer Um Suheib said: "We have every kind of casualty from every kind of weapon. We want our children and civilians to be safe. Let the armies square off and leave us alone."
Instead troops and rebels are locked in urban combat in the cobblestone lanes of the Old City, with the front lines in perpetual flux as checkpoints and sniper positions shift daily.
The commander of the rebel Al-Khattab Brigade said that the fighting in the Old City had claimed the lives of four of his men in the past three days, most of them killed by snipers.
He said forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad had suffered "heavy losses" but gave no figure.
"Most of the casualties are civilians because they are hitting residential areas," the commander added, declining to give his name.
Doctors said that bakeries in the city had been hit "at least seven times" this month alone, leading to a high civilian toll as residents were forced to venture out to queue for bread.
The latest hit on a bakery on Sunday left 11 people critically wounded, the medics said.
More than 15 loud explosions were heard in the city in the space of just 60 minutes on Tuesday.
The fighting focused on the Maysaloon neighbourhood, on the fringes of the Old City, and in Bab al-Nayrab on the road to a military airport of the same name.
In the southwest of the city, where the army launched a major offensive earlier this month to recapture rebel-held neighbourhoods, the battle lines were also fluid.
The carcasses of burnt out buses sealed off streets under rebel control, while stones and tyres marked off roads leading into areas held by Assad's forces.
The army recaptured the Salaheddin neighbourhood but the adjacent Saif al-Dawla district remains in the hands of the rebels.
In the city centre, smoke rose over Aleppo's historic UNESCO-listed Citadel, as, in the cool shade of one of the Old City's historic market inns, rebels cleaned and loaded ageing Kalashnikovs.

Brazil was one of the most dominant nations in football in the 1990s and early 2000s, winning three World Cup titles and two Confederation Cups. It also reached another World Cup final and won four Copa Americas from 1997-2007.
But the five-time world champions haven't had much success since their elimination in the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup in Germany. It also fell in the quarters in 2010 in South Africa and last year in the Copa America in Argentina.
Brazil's last major title was the 2009 Confederations Cup, and since then Spain emerged as the dominant football force with a World Cup title and consecutive Euro Championships.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A surprise surge in gasoline prices is taking some of the fun out of summer.
The national average for a gallon of gas at the pump has climbed to $3.67, a rise of 34 cents since July 1. An increase in crude oil prices and problems with refineries and pipelines in the West Coast and Midwest, including a fire in California, are mostly to blame.
Analysts don't expect gas prices to get as high as they did in April, when 10 states passed $4 a gallon and the U.S. average topped out at $3.94. But this is still unwelcome news in this sluggish economy, since any extra money that goes to fill gas tanks doesn't get spent on movies and dinners out.
The rising prices could also put pressure on President Barack Obama in the heat of his re-election campaign.
When Phil Van Schepen recently went to fill up his dry-cleaning delivery van in Coon Rapids, Minn., he found a Post-it note a driver before him had placed on the pump faulting Obama for high gasoline prices.
"It's a reminder of his energy policies overall, which I don't agree with," said Van Schepen, who buys about 100 gallons a week and finds he is spending about $40 more than he did in early July. Still, he said the Post-it "was a bit much" because the president isn't responsible for gasoline prices.
Analysts and economists agree, saying prices for crude oil and wholesale gasoline are set on financial exchanges around the world based on supply and demand and expectations about how those factors may change.
The price at the pump in the U.S. fell more than 60 cents per gallon during the spring as the global economy slowed and turmoil in the Middle East seemed to subside.
But crude oil is climbing again, rising to $94 a barrel from a low of $78 in late June. Production outages in South Sudan and the North Sea, Western sanctions that have cut the flow of Iranian oil, Iran's threat to block tankers passing through the vital Strait of Hormuz, and fears that the violence in Syria could escalate into a wider regional conflict have driven up oil prices.
Seasonal factors are also sending pump prices higher. Gas usually costs more in the late spring and summer because refiners have to make more expensive blends of gasoline to meet clean air rules and because the summer driving season boosts demand.
In the past few weeks, pipelines serving Wisconsin and Illinois ruptured, refineries were shut down unexpectedly because of equipment problems in Illinois and Indiana, and a blaze broke out at a refinery in Richmond, Calif.
Gasoline prices shot up more than 50 cents in the span of a month in Indiana, Vermont, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan and Wisconsin. And California drivers have seen gas climb 13 cents since the fire Monday. Motorists in many cities there are paying well over $4.
Drivers in 20 states, including the possible White House battleground states of Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Wisconsin, are paying more for gasoline this year than they did last year, and the list will probably soon include Virginia and North Carolina, said Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service. The national average a year ago was $3.64.
"If you are paying more than in the past, it does have the potential to hurt the president," Kloza said.
Economists said the price bump probably won't have much of an effect on economic growth, at least not yet. The extra 34 cents a gallon translates to $33 per month for a typical household.
Prices could go higher if Middle East tensions rise, more refinery problems emerge or hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico force oil drillers or refiners to shut down. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration this week said this could be a more active hurricane season than previously thought.
But analysts say that without those disruptions, gasoline will probably begin dropping after Labor Day as refiners switch to cheaper blends and drivers hit the road less often. That means voters could be going to the polls as prices are falling.
