Ian Fraser Interview by Matthew J | Day in the Lyfe Graffiti ...

by Matthew J (@IamJamesMatthew)

There is no denying it; the retail music business has been in a serious decline. Big retail chains such as SAM THE RECORD MAN and CD Plus have been closing up shops cross-country and in similar fashion; many independently-owned record stores are closing their doors, as well. What is causing all this? The popular business notion is that downloadable music -by way of the internet- has taken money from the stores leaving them with no choice but to close their doors. In other words, we cannot compete with the internet so let?s just quit without putting up a fight.

Enter Ian Fraser, the owner and operator of OBSOLETE RECORDS, who rather than following the so-called ?popular notion? is going against the grain and providing his loyal and still growing customer base with the hard-to-find; sought-after physical records which the other stores aren?t carrying.

I sat down with Ian to talk about the current retail business, downloading music vs. owning physical recordings debate, his personal playlist, and more. Hard work is not a new concept and although he is not a fan of Curtis Jackson?s music, Ian does embody the hustler?s ambition: be your own boss, provide people with great music, and get paid while doing it.

obsolete records store front

We?ll start this off by having you introduce yourself to everybody reading this. Where are you from? What do you do? What is your story?

I?m Ian Fraser, the owner of Obsolete Records. We are located at 2454 Agricola Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I?m born and raised in Halifax and I love this city and that it embodies; including its many flaws.

How did you get your start in the music retail business?

I loved a lot of different music at an early age, my parents encouraged this love of music by purchasing cassettes that I wanted for various birthdays and Christmas?s my Dad bought me ?The Real Thing? by Faith No More and ?Appetite For Destruction? by Guns N Roses when I was nine; my Mom bought me Onyx?s ?Bacdafucup? and N.W.A.?s ?Niggaz4life? when I was 14 I got my first job at a record store when I was 19 and have worked at two other stores before deciding to open my own.

  • SMIP-016 is a promising experimental drug that kills chronic leukemia cells.
  • The drug targets a protein called CD37, but it wasn't known how this kills leukemia cells.
  • This study showed unexpectedly that CD37 helps regulate both cell-death and cell-survival signals, explaining how the drug works and how it might be improved.

COLUMBUS, Ohio A new study has identified a life-and-death signaling role for a molecule on the surface of the immune cells involved in the most common form of chronic leukemia. The finding could lead to more effective therapy for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), an as yet incurable cancer that occurs in more than 16,000 Americans annually.

The study, led by researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC James), examines how an experimental drug called SMIP-016 kills CLL cells.

Earlier work by the same researchers showed that the drug targets a molecule called CD37, which is found on the surface of CLL cells. In this new study, the researchers discovered that the CD37 molecule has two regions that can concurrently activate two separate pathways in CLL cells, one that leads to cell death and another that promotes cell survival.

The findings show SMIP-016 activates the "death" part of the molecule, and they suggest that blocking the "survival" part of the molecule could improve the drug's effectiveness, the researchers say.

The study is published in the May issue of journal Cancer Cell.

"These findings open new possibilities for the use of immune-based therapy for treating CLL," says principal investigator Dr. John Byrd, a CLL specialist and professor of Medicine, of Medicinal Chemistry and of Veterinary Biosciences.

"We are already targeting the cell-death pathway using SMIP-016, and we might be able to optimize the drug's effectiveness by simultaneously blocking the cell-survival region of the molecule with a second antibody," he says.

Byrd notes that drugs that can block the cell-survival pathway already exist.

"We were very surprised and excited to find that CD37 is directly involved in regulating survival and cell-death pathways," says first author Rosa Lapalombella, a research scientist in Byrd's laboratory. "That's not usually the case for molecules of this kind."

Co-principal investigator Dr. Natarajan Muthusamy, associate professor of Medicine, notes that CD37 belongs to a family of molecules called tetraspanins, which usually only facilitate signaling by bringing together other molecules that when combined issue signals.

"This work is a great example of collaborative research involving several laboratories," says researcher and co-principal investigator Dr. Michael Freitas, associate professor of molecular virology, immunology and medical genetics, whose laboratory contributed to the global proteomic work of how CD37 signals. "The support for, and emphasis on, team science is a major driving strength of Ohio State and contributed to this project's findings," he says.

Byrd hopes to begin a clinical trial soon that tests SMIP-016 combined with a drug that blocks the survival pathway.

"Overall, these findings reinforce our belief SMIP-016 could be an effective agent for treating CLL and other malignancies that sometimes express the CD37 protein, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and acute lymphoblastic leukemia," says Byrd, who is the D. Warren Brown Chair of Leukemia Research.

Lloyd's of London prepares for Greek exit - paper

LONDON | Sun May 27, 2012 11:56am BST

LONDON (Reuters) - The Lloyd's of London insurance market has reduced its exposure "as much as possible" to the crisis-hit euro zone in preparation for a collapse of the bloc's single currency, its chief executive told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

Richard Ward said Lloyd's had put in place a contingency plan to switch euro underwriting to multi-currency settlement if Greece abandoned the euro, and that it could have to take writedowns on its 58.9 billion pounds investment portfolio if the euro zone broke up.

"With all the concerns around the euro zone at the moment, we've got to be careful doing business in Europe and there are a lot of question marks over writing business in the future in euros," Ward told the UK newspaper.

"I don't think that if Greece exited the euro it would lead to the collapse of the euro zone but what we need to do is prepare for that eventuality," he said.

Europe accounts for 18 percent of Lloyd's 23.5 billion pounds of gross written premiums, mainly in France, Germany, Spain and Italy, the newspaper said.

On Wednesday, Reuters reported that each euro zone country was preparing a contingency plan for the eventuality of Greece leaving the single currency.

Lloyd's, which traces its origins back 324 years to a London coffee house where merchants met to insure ships, suffered its second worst ever loss last year after absorbing record claims from catastrophes including Japan's Tohoku earthquake.

Many Years Young: Exercise Key to Post-Breast-Cancer Survival

(MyHealthNewsDaily) Breast cancer treatments can take a heavy toll on lung and heart health and could shorten a woman's life, according to a new study.

Researchers found that breast cancer survivors, even those who had completed their cancer therapy years previously, were less fit than sedentary but healthy women of the same age. One third of breast cancer patients scored so low on a fitness test they might not be able to perform normal tasks, such as walking half a mile or up stairs, the researchers said.? But the study also showed that breast cancer patients who maintained high cardiopulmonary fitness survived 36 months on average, compared with 16 months for patients with low cardiopulmonary fitness? Pass it on:?Treatment for breast cancer may compromise heart and lung health, potentially leading to earlier death, which would make exercise an important part of recovery.

Attitudes Toward the New Middle East: Surveys of Arab and Jewish Opinion in Israel

Now that the perpetually stalled peace process appears to be at a standstill, how do Arab and Jewish Israelis view other increasingly important issues in the region? What is their opinion on the Arab Spring? How do Israelis feel about the prospect of war with Iran? What are the Israeli public?s views on President Obama and the United States?

On December 1, the Saban Center for Middle East Policy at Brookings hosted Nonresident Senior Fellow Shibley Telhami for the release of his annual survey of Arab and Jewish Israeli public opinion. Telhami, the poll's principal investigator and the Anwar Sadat professor for Peace and Development at the University of Maryland,?presented his research and key findings followed by a discussion with Nahum Barnea, columnist for Israeli newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth. William Galston, senior fellow in Governance Studies at Brookings, provided introductory remarks and moderated the discussion.

After the program, the panelists?took audience questions.

Struggling To Buy Or Sell Commercial Properties? Try These Ideas!

Determine your financing methods before you even start looking. It is just a shame to find the perfect property only to find that you are in a bind when it comes time to pay. You should determine and qualify with a lender before you start looking for the right property so you have your finances set when the time comes.

You have decided to invest in commercial real estate, keep your thinking big! When buying a five unit apartment, it will require commercial financing. So, if you were planning on buying a five unit property, why not get a property with at least ten units. It isn?t a lot harder dealing with a ten unit property than it is a five unit property.

When investing in commercial real estate, you want to be sure you hire the correct professionals that are most suitable. If you can find an attorney who understands the legal issues and risks you have when you invest, you will minimize your risks. Hiring the best attorney is a great investment to make before investing in real estate.

On average, it will take about a week, maybe longer for review of the legal documents for the sale. Be sure to keep this in mind when you are planning any kind of projects for that property. It will take much longer for a commercial sale to be completed than what it would a residential real estate sale.

If you are offered a team of brokers from a firm, take the time to learn about what the individual responsibilities are going to be of all of the team members. You may find that you are paying for a team effort in your investment but that you are actually getting the help from only one broker.

Certain hazardous materials might be present in apartments located in older buildings. Ask the leasing agent about the presence of asbestos, lead based paint, or pesticides. Don?t rent an apartment with a known health hazard to you and your family. The long-term health issues caused by unhealthy materials in the apartment will cause more problems, than the short-term benefits of cheaper rent.

Be sure of zoning and deed restrictions before you make any commercial real estate purchase. These are serious indicators of the property?s benefits for your business. You have to be sure of whether your operations can be efficiently and sufficiently accommodated within those restrictions to ensure that you are making a wise investment.

Commercial real estate is big business but what happens if you have to sell? First, you need to get a reputable real estate agent. She should know the area will help you decide on a plan that will help you achieve what you need with the sale of your property.

Remember that any building you may own will eventually start to get old. It will need work and might take more money than you had planned to maintain it. Think about future costs that may come up when deciding which properties you want to buy. It will save you money down the road.

Investing in commercial real estate is more complex than residential home trading, for a very good reason: The potential profits are much greater. The traders who realize these profits are the ones who do their homework. A well-prepared, well-educated commercial real estate investor is less likely to fall prey to the common pitfalls and more likely to get the most out of his or her money.

Exotic particles, chilled and trapped, form giant matter wave

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? Physicists have trapped and cooled exotic particles called excitons so effectively that they condensed and cohered to form a giant matter wave.

This feat will allow scientists to better study the physical properties of excitons, which exist only fleetingly yet offer promising applications as diverse as efficient harvesting of solar energy and ultrafast computing.

"The realization of the exciton condensate in a trap opens the opportunity to study this interesting state. Traps allow control of the condensate, providing a new way to study fundamental properties of light and matter," said Leonid Butov, professor of physics at the University of California, San Diego. A paper reporting his team's success was recently published in the scientific journal Nano Letters.

Excitons are composite particles made up of an electron and a "hole" left by a missing electron in a semiconductor. Created by light, these coupled pairs exist in nature. The formation and dynamics of excitons play a critical role in photosynthesis, for example.

Like other matter, excitons have a dual nature of both particle and wave, in a quantum mechanical view. The waves are usually unsynchronized, but when particles are cooled enough to condense, their waves synchronize and combine to form a giant matter wave, a state that others have observed for atoms.

Scientists can easily create excitons by shining light on a semiconductor, but in order for the excitons to condense they must be chilled before they recombine.

The key to the team's success was to separate the electrons far enough from their holes so that excitons could last long enough for the scientists to cool them into a condensate. They accomplished this by creating structures called "coupled quantum wells" that separate electrons from holes in different layers of alloys made of gallium, arsenic and aluminum.

Then they set an electrostatic trap made by a diamond-shaped electrode and chilled their special semiconducting material in an optical dilution refrigerator to as cold as 50 milli-Kelvin, just a fraction of a degree above absolute zero.

A laser focused on the surface of the material created excitons, which began to accumulate at the bottom of the trap as they cooled. Below 1 Kelvin, the entire cloud of excitons cohered to form a single matter wave, a signature of a state called a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Other scientists have seen whole atoms do this when confined in a trap and cooled, but this is the first time that scientists have seen subatomic particles form coherent matter waves in a trap.

Varying the size and depth of the trap will alter the coherent exciton state, providing this team, and others, the opportunity to study the properties of light and mater in a new way.

This most recent discovery stems from an ongoing collaboration between Leonid Butov's research group in UC San Diego's Division of Physical Sciences, including Alexander High, Jason Leonard and Mikas Remeika, and Micah Hanson and Arthur Gossard in UC Santa Barbara's Materials Department. The Army Research Office and the National Science Foundation funded the experiments, and the Department of Energy supported the development of spectroscopy in the optical dilution refrigerator, the technique used to observe the exciton condensate in a trap.

(AP) ? Just a month before its June release in the U.S., Paramount Pictures delayed the debut of "G.I. Joe: Retaliation" by nine months after another movie based on a Hasbro plaything was trounced at the box office by "The Avengers."

Paramount on Wednesday pushed back the release of the "G.I. Joe" sequel from June 29 until March 29, 2013, in order to adapt the movie for 3-D screens, according to Paramount's executive vice president of publicity, Katie Martin Kelley.

The move comes after "Battleship," based on the Hasbro board game, debuted at No. 2 at the North American box office with $25.5 million in ticket sales, behind the still-strong "Avengers," which brought in a whopping $55.6 million in its third weekend of release.

Action films often get most of their revenue from 3-D showings, which cost a few dollars more per ticket and can boost a movie's prospects to make its money back.

March has proven to be a big month for movies because there's a lack of big-budget competition, according to Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box office division of Hollywood.com. This March, "The Hunger Games" premiered on March 12 and went on to make $629 million worldwide.

"G.I. Joe: Retaliation" also suffered from a lack of strong buzz online, according to Ben Carlson, president of market tracking firm Fizziology.

WASHINGTON - The second edition of Law and the American Health Care System was released by Foundation Press on May 15, 2012. Building on its 1997 predecessor, the second edition textbook offers a comprehensive vision and analysis of the intersection of law and the U.S. health care system. Law and the American Health Care System arrives at a time of unprecedented change in how health care is organized, financed, and delivered. Throughout its major fields of study, the book focuses on how a dramatically changing legal environment influencesand in turn is influenced bya dramatically evolving health care system. The textbook not only charts the interaction of law and health care but places this interaction into a broader and international policy context encompassing the economic, social, political, and cultural environment in which health care is organized and delivered. Through the presentation of cases, statutes and regulations, and extensive discussion that includes the vast changes wrought by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the book offers an in-depth exploration of law and policy that shape key areas like access to health care, health care financing, health care quality, including the rise of new systems of care such as Accountable Care Organizations, and health care transactions in the marketplace.

Sara Rosenbaum, Harold and Jane Hirsh Professor of Health Law and Policy, George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services, and David M. Frankford, Professor of Law, Rutgers School of Law Camden, serve as the book's lead authors. They are joined by Sylvia A. Law, Elizabeth K. Dollard Professor of Law, Medicine and Psychiatry, and Rand Rosenblatt, Professor of Law, Rutgers School of Law Camden.

Lynn R. Goldman, MD, MPH, Dean of the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services said, "At this critical point in our nation's history, Sara Rosenbaum and her co-authors deliver a meticulously researched, comprehensive and dynamic analysis illuminating the ever more complicated field of law, health care and public policy. If students, policy makers, and anyone else really wants to understand the history and impact of law and public policy on the health care debate, this book is a must read."

Rayman L. Solomon, J.D., Ph.D, Dean and Professor of Law of Rutgers School of Law Camden, stated, "All case books serve to teach students an area of law. Only a few by their organization and explanation serve to systematize an important emerging field and should be consulted by students, scholars, and practitioners. Law and the American Health Care System joins this select group."

The Most Effective Internet Dedicated Hosting

Simply put, the most effective internet dedicated hosting ought to be one which will cater to any or all your wants. If you're into an online hosting business, a zealous server is analogous to the A-list actors in Hollywood. this kind of server is operated through a robust laptop that's used for no different purpose however as a network server. This laptop is reserved for all of your network wants. It offers off services solely to one domain or account name. this will be done either through rental or exclusive use of the pc unit. Therefore, it's employed by one organization solely. All its knowledge are stored within the host company's knowledge center.

?

Included with dedicated internet servers is an operating system that's either Windows or Linux. at the side of it are SQL server, web server, a bearing panel, and a web affiliation.

All of those are housed within the same knowledge center solutions. The services of a zealous internet server are required for an online web site or company sites that require plenty of traffic. shoppers will customise the server though their configurations are remotely operated from the host company. There are instances whereby the server can not be employed by a shopper. In these instances the server functions as resource server giving all management to the host. keep in mind that the corporate doesn't physically own or access the server. The host owns it and that they have management over it.

?

This is the rationale why selecting the most effective internet dedicated hosting is extremely vital. Your Hosting company has the facility over your business operation. whereas it's useful to high finish e-commerce sites, the very fact that it's a property of the hosting company remains. it's conjointly useful in developing advanced on-line businesses since you may want the protection and house that dedicated hosting plans offer. High finish on-line business firms purchase servers dedicated to them in order that they will have additional management to the server. Hardware from the net hosting company is rented or purchased for the aim of supporting and managing the net web site. These dedicated servers are stored in datacenters that offer HVAC systems and redundant sources of power. the most effective advantage for on-line business firms is that these servers don't seem to be as expensive because it appears. they are doing not want giant initial investments.

?

There are 2 varieties of dedicated hosting solutions - the unmanaged and managed hosting. With the unmanaged plans, web affiliation, web server, hardware, and operating systems are included. With the managed plans, a similar parts are gift except that this arrange includes everything else that your solely concern is your content and internet style. other than the functions mentioned earlier, a zealous server conjointly manages printer resources. What most on-line business entrepreneurs ought to keep in mind is that not all Hosting are dedicated. There are instances whereby a laptop will act on different functions whereas it performs the essential functions of the server.

(AP) ? Sri Lanka's former army chief, who was imprisoned after losing an election to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was released from prison Monday to thousands of cheering supporters.

As firecrackers erupted in the background, Sarath Fonseka promised to carry on with his challenge to the government.

"I will sacrifice my life to serve the people of this country. My courage will not be shattered even if they detain me for 10 years and I will not stop performing my duty," he said.

He was freed as a result of a pardon issued by Rajapaksa, who signed the official papers on Saturday.

Fonseka's release came after Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Friday in Washington, with the protection of human rights highlighted in their meeting. The U.S. has called Fonseka a political prisoner.

Though released from prison, Fonseka will not be allowed to contest elections immediately. Under Sri Lankan law, a person who has served six months or more of a prison term longer than two years cannot contest elections for seven years.

Tiran Alles, an opposition lawmaker and a member of Fonseka's political party who previously negotiated with Rajapaksa to obtain Fonseka's release, said they would hold talks with the government to obtain Fonseka's voting rights too.

A full presidential pardon could restore those rights.

Fonseka ? Sri Lanka's only four-star general ? had been credited with leading Sri Lanka's army to victory in the country's long and bloody civil war against ethnic Tamil rebels. But he was jailed after challenging Rajapaksa in elections.

He was court-martialed on several charges related to his military service. Fonseka said the cases were a political vendetta to persecute him for daring to run against Rajapaksa. The government denied the accusation.

The court-martial stripped him of his title, medals, pension and other honors, dishonorably discharged him from the army and sentenced him to a 30-month jail term.

In November 2011, he was sentenced to an additional three-year term for allegedly implicating the defense secretary and president's brother, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, in war crimes during the civil war.

About 3,000 supporters gathered in front of the prison in Colombo on Monday, cheering and shouting slogans. They blocked traffic on a main road for hours.

Fonseka vowed to continue his struggle to create "a free and fair country" and urged the people to join hands with him in his endeavor.

Fonseka and Rajapaksa had a falling out months after the war ended in May 2009, and their relationship deteriorated further after Fonseka challenged the president in elections.

While in detention, Fonseka won a parliamentary seat on the opposition ticket in April 2010, but was disqualified from holding office after the court-martial.

Sri Lanka has faced growing criticism over alleged rights abuses in the final phase of the civil war. Its ties with Washington have been strained by U.S. sponsorship of a resolution passed by the U.N. Human Rights Council in March to press Sri Lanka to conduct an independent probe into civilian deaths in the final months of fighting.

More than 80,000 people were killed in the conflict, in which ethnic minority Tamils were seeking a separate state, claiming decades of discrimination by the Sinhalese majority.
