A king's final hours, told by his mortal remains

Skeleton of Richard III reveals a violent and chaotic end

O BLOODY RICHARD!

The recently excavated bones of England?s King Richard III bear witness to his infamous life and death. Severe scoliosis curved his spine, which may have been painful and made it difficult to breath. Of the 10 wounds discovered on his skeleton, two are candidates for the death blow: a blade plunged up through the bottom of his skull and gash with an axe-like weapon that took off part of the back of his head.

History and literature have painted England?s King Richard III as a scoundrel who met a violent death in battle and was unceremoniously buried. Now that researchers have revealed some conclusions from a fast-paced scientific investigation of a skeleton found last year under a parking lot in Leicester, England, that end seems all the more gruesome. The results announced February 4 by a team from the University of Leicester paint a picture that is remarkably consistent?with both historical and fictional accounts.

The search for the king?s body began in August 2012, in the parking lot of a Leicester city council building. An excavation there uncovered walls and other structures of Grey Friars church, where Richard III was buried on August 22, 1485, the day of his ignominious death at the Battle of Bosworth. Beneath the spot where the church stood, the researchers found a skeleton stuffed into what appears to have been a hastily dug grave, too small for the body it contained.

History says Richard III?s final moments were brutal; Shakespeare portrays the king frantically calling for a horse to carry him back into battle after being knocked off his horse, only to be killed by a deserter from his ranks. Though the bones can?t tell us about his final words, 10 wounds confirm a violent and chaotic end. A gaping wound in the back of his head suggests the death blow was delivered by halberd, a bladed pole weapon favored in the 15th century. A second wound that also would have been fatal on its own penetrated the skull at the base. Carefully examining the skull?s interior revealed a mark opposite to this entry point, suggesting a blade penetrated 10.5 centimeters.

Then there are the humiliation wounds. In battles throughout history, combatants have rushed to plunge their weapons into the dead or mortally wounded bodies of enemy leaders. Cuts deep enough to penetrate bone litter the skull, marring its jaw and cheeks. Richard?s ribs bear signs of further attacks, osteoarchaeologist Jo Appleby reported. His pelvis was nicked, indicating that a knife or dagger was plunged into his right buttock. Many of these wounds would have been prevented if Richard III had been wearing protective helmet and armor, leading the team to speculate that these injuries were inflicted immediately after death.

Historical accounts report that after his death in the final major battle in the War of the Roses, Richard III?s body was tied up, thrown naked over the back of a horse and brought to Leicester for public viewing. Richard?s body was then buried unceremoniously in Grey Friars church in Leicester. The arrangement of the skeleton?s hands suggests they were still tied at burial.

?The last thing the victors wanted was to give him a nice tomb in Westminster Abbey and have people put pretty flowers on it,? says Cornell?s Paul Hyams, a specialist in conflicts and disputes of the Middle Ages.

The church was demolished sometime after 1538. In the early 17th century, a mayor of Leicester built a mansion on the site. In the 19th century, excavations for a brick outhouse appear to have severed the feet from the rest of skeleton and come close to destroying the whole grave.

While there?s minor damage from being buried for 500 years, the skeleton is well preserved, Appleby said. It shows he was a slight man whose spine curved like a question mark ? characteristics consistent with historical accounts. While not ?the foul bunch-backed toad? that Shakespeare made him out to be, Richard III?s skeleton indicates he had scoliosis that developed sometime after about age 10. The condition would have reduced his height, caused one shoulder to stand higher than the other and probably caused him pain. Contrary to another Shakespearean description, neither of Richard?s arms was withered.

Existing portraits Richard III depict him with a prominent chin and nose. Those same features emerged when facial reconstruction experts added layers of muscle and skin to a digital scan of the skull, says Caroline Wilkinson of the University of Dundee in Scotland, who led the reconstruction team.

Biochemical analyses suggest that he ate a lot of meat and seafood, the kind of diet few people could afford.

While the bones tell much of the story, genetic data cement the case that the skeleton is King Richard?s. The researchers examined DNA from mitochondria, cellular factories that contain genetic material, which they extracted from the skeleton?s teeth and right femur. Unlike nuclear DNA, half of which comes from each parent, mitochondrial DNA passes down only from mother to child. Previous research by historian John Ashdown-Hill had traced an all-female line through 17 generations from Anne of York, Richard?s sister, to Michael Ibsen, a cabinetmaker in Canada. He agreed to have his DNA tested. The genetic work also led to another individual in the maternal line who wanted to remain anonymous.

Ibsen?s mitochondrial DNA and that of the anonymous donor matched the DNA extracted from the skeleton, says Turi King, who led the genetic work. Unlike nuclear DNA, mitochondrial DNA is not usually unique to individuals, but it is far more prevalent in the body and more likely to be found when remains are very old, or not much is left, hence its frequent use in forensic investigations. The DNA signature shared by the skeleton, Ibsen and the third individual, called haplotype J1c2c, ?is quite rare, says King, making the match a strong argument for relatedness. Only a few percent of Europeans carry it.

?They?ve built a strong forensic case,? says anthropologist John Hawks of the University of Wisconsin?Madison. The analyses of the remains have not yet appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, he notes. But none of the presented evidence calls into question the notion that that the skeleton is indeed Richard?s.

More definitive will be genetic data from the Y chromosome, which passes from father to son. The researchers are analyzing it now, says King. Several male-line relatives that trace their lineage to Edward III, Richard III?s great-great-grandfather, have agreed to share their genetic data. (Richard III himself had only one legitimate son, who died as a child in 1484 without any descendants). The team will compare the skeleton's DNA with those descendants?.

?I?m dying to get on with it,? says King.

The science may be strong and call into question some minor historical details, but scholars doubt that the findings will change perceptions of Richard?s place in history. The king has long been painted as a cunning man with few scruples, responsible for the death of the ?princes in the tower,? the 12-year-old King Edward V and his 9-year-old brother, Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York. After Richard III took the throne, the former king and his brother lived in the Tower of London and then disappeared.

?You are still going to be assessing him on his deeds,? says Lorraine Attreed, an expert in medieval history at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. But the new evidence highlights the link medieval cultures made between physical impediments and the content of one?s character. Shakespeare emphasized ? and it turns out, exaggerated ? Richard III?s disfigurement.

?Evil was thought to be manifest in the physical exterior,? she says. ?But what was obviously a physical impediment did not deter him from being a very fine warrior.?

Tunisia to form government of technocrats: PM | Morocco World News

TUNIS, Feb 6, 2013 (AFP) -

Tunisian Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali said Wednesday he would form a government of technocrats without political affiliations, after the murder of opposition leader Chokri Belaid sparked violent protests.

?I have decided to form a government of competent nationals without political affiliation, which will have a mandate limited to managing the affairs of the country until elections are held in the shortest possible time,? Jebali said in a televised address to the nation.

He did not explicitly say that he was dissolving the existing government, nor did he name future ministers or set a date for the cabinet reshuffle, which must be confirmed by the national assembly.

Jebali?s announcement comes after a months-long impasse between his Islamist party Ennahda and its secular coalition partners over the distribution of ministries.

Jebali said that plans to form a government of technocrats had stalled before the ?odious (killing) that has shocked our people.?

?(Belaid?s) assassination has quickened my decision, for which I assume full responsibility before God and before our people,? he added.

The secular parties in government have been demanding that key ministries be assigned to independents, a move rejected by Ennahda hardliners, including party head Rached Ghannouchi.

Jebali is considered a moderate within his party and favourable to the justice and foreign affairs ministries being allocated to non-political figures.

Planned fresh polls are unable to take place before the adoption of a new constitution, whose drafting has also failed to make progress because of wrangling within the National Constituent Assembly elected in October 2011.

Dell to go private in $24.4 billion deal

(Reuters) - Computer maker Dell Inc will go private in a $24.4 billion deal that also involves Microsoft Corp and private equity firm Silver Lake, the parties said on Tuesday.

Company founder Michael Dell and Silver Lake are paying $13.65 per share in cash for the world's No. 3 computer maker.

The deal is being financed by cash and equity from Michael Dell, cash from Silver Lake, cash from Michael Dell's investment firm MSD Capital, a $2 billion loan from Microsoft and debt financing from four banks.

The transaction is expected to close before the end of the second quarter of Dell's fiscal 2014.

News of the buyout talks first emerged on January 14, although they were reported to have started in the latter part of 2012. Michael Dell had previously acknowledged thinking about going private as far back as 2010.

The $13.65-per-share price is a premium of about 24 percent to the average of $11 price at which Dell stock traded before news of the deal talks broke and is far below the $17.61 that the shares were trading for a year ago.

Dell has steadily ceded market share in PCs to nimbler rivals such as Lenovo Group and is struggling to re-ignite growth. That is in spite of Michael Dell's efforts in the five years since he retook the helm of the company he founded in 1984, following a brief hiatus during which its fortunes waned.

J.P. Morgan and Evercore Partners were financial advisers, and Debevoise & Plimpton LLP was the legal adviser to the special committee of Dell's board. Goldman Sachs was financial adviser, and Hogan Lovells was legal adviser to Dell.

Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz was legal adviser to Michael Dell. BofA Merrill Lynch, Barclays, Credit Suisse and RBC Capital Markets were financial advisers to Silver Lake, and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP was its legal adviser.

Dell shares were halted at market open Tuesday.

relationships and the IKEA effect? - In The Name Of Love

There?s something about building and creating with screws, nuts, and bolts we can?t put a language around. Whether it?s the assembly or adoration of our projects, IKEA has tapped into the psychology of labor creating a meaningful experience.

A professor?and graduate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology?began researching the affinity we have towards projects we successfully complete. [If you're anything like me, you'll end up inevitably having leftover screws or bolts which IKEA?obviously?gave me by accident.] Whether lopsided or sometimes uneven, we are more inclined to admire our work because we played a hand in the assembly. Basically, labor creates value.

?By the time you finish struggling with the instructions, you like it more,? said Dan Ariely, a professor of behavioral economics at Duke University.

In addition to admiring our labor, we are more prone to share the valuable work we created with those around us.?Oh this modern bookshelf suspended on my wall? Yeah, I built it. But get this: the psychology of affirmation for successfully completed work inspires others to take on similar tasks.

Case in point:
My freshman year of college a dorm mate successfully [or not so successfully] built a shelf for her shoes. I was so impressed with her Tim-The-Toolman-Taylor skills that I set out to build my very own shoe shelf and boast of my awesome craftsman skills.?THIS SHELF WAS MY BY MY HANDS! MY GLORIOUS HANDS! Or something like that.

There clinical term for this is coined The Ikea Effect; labor creates meaning.

As I dug deeper into the research, I couldn?t help but parallel the effect of labor into our personal relationships. Labor creates meaning. In order for us to find value in our relationships, we must work at it. If this initial effects of this theory are correct, not only will we admire and be loyal to our relationships, they will stand as a model for others to follow.

When I asked my mom how she has remained married for over 35 years, endured two bouts with cancer, survived rearing five children, and dedicated ministry for over 30 years, she simply responds,?Well, we just didn?t give up.?As simplistic as the phrase is, the weight and power of the words are the directions to building something worth meaning. We are all handed nuts, bolts, screws, and material to build our relationships. The question is whether or not we will complete it.

In a moment of strained frustration, I called a friend and asked her why we were off. You know that feeling?it?s like when you are standing five feet from someone you know yet you can?t recognize them and you are speaking different languages. Yeah, that feeling. Through a series of awkward questions and stammered responses I told her,?Look, we both know this feels off. But we?re in each other?s lives for a reason. And because of that simple reason, I?m willing to fight to make our friendship work. I want to be your friend for a really long time. So if you think we can keep on being fake with each other, I?m telling you we can?t.?And with that move, another bolt tightened up a screw in the creation called friendship we were building. Labor creates meaning.

If the two most important things in life are loving our Creator with every fiber of our being and being in relationship [Luke 10:27], then let?s build our horizontal and vertical relationships with legitimate care and loyalty. May people admire our relationships?perhaps slightly uneven or lopsided at times?and be inspired to create their own meaningful experiences. Why? Because labor creates meaning.

Work hard, friends. The world is watching.

Pacific earthquake: Are scientists underestimating 'superquakes'? (+video)

Pacific earthquake: An 8.0 Pacific earthquake hit about 1,000 miles northeast of Australia. Over the past half-century, three 9.0 or higher 'superquakes' have hit the Pacific's Ring of Fire, pushing scientists to rethink their models of earthquake formation.

By Becky Oskin,?Our Amazing Planet / February 5, 2013

The 8.0 Pacific quake that hit the Solomon Islands tonight should be about most powerful earthquake possible, according to seismologists' theories of earthquake cycles. And the earthquakes that rocked Tohoku, Japan in 2011, Sumatra in 2004, and Chile in 1960 ? all of magnitude 9.0 or greater ? should not have happened. That might mean earthquake prediction needs an overhaul, some researchers say.

All these earthquakes struck along subduction zones, where two of Earth's tectonic plates collide and one dives beneath the other. Earlier earthquakes had released the pent-up strain along Chile's master fault, meaning no big quakes were coming, scientists had thought. Japan and Sumatra both sat above on old oceanic crust, thought to be too stiff for superquakes.

And records of past quakes, combined with measurements of the speed of Earth's tectonic plates, suggested the Tohoku and Sumatra-Andaman regions couldn't make quakes larger than 8.4, almost nine times smaller than a magnitude 9.0 temblor.

"These areas had been written off as places incapable of producing a great earthquake," said Chris Goldfinger, a marine geologist at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

But the events of 1960, 2004 and 2011 showed that these faults were capable of producing some of the most destructive earthquakes in recorded history, suggesting earthquake researchers need to re-think aspects of how they evaluate a fault's earthquake potential.

"It's time to come up with something new," Goldfinger told OurAmazingPlanet.

Faults are like batteries

When two tectonic plates collide, they build up strain where a fault sticks, or locks, together. Earthquakes release this strain, which is a form of energy.

For decades, scientists assumed faults acted like rubber bands, steadily building up strain and then releasing it all at once, Goldfinger said. The longer the time since the last earthquake, the larger the next earthquake would be, the model predicted.

The problem was researchers failed to recognize that faults can store energy like a battery, Goldfinger said. And just like batteries, they can discharge energy in small amounts, or all at once, he explained.

Goldfinger and other researchers now think if a "small" quake hits, it may not release all of the accumulated energy in a fault. (On a subduction zone, a small quake can still register in the magnitude-8.0 range, which is devastating to nearby cities.)

Thus, a fault can "borrow" stored energy from previous strain-building cycles, generating larger earthquakes than expected, such as those that hit Sumatra and Tohoku, Goldfinger and his colleagues propose in a study published in the January/February 2013 issue of the journal Seismological Research Letters.

"Those models were already being called into question when Sumatra drove one stake through their heart, and Tohoku drove the second one," said Goldfinger, the lead author of the study.

Social Media's Rocky Road In Business (ZDNet)
Despite all-time high levels of adoption in many organizations, the early results have at times been decidedly mixed. However, this has long been the case with emerging tech, whether the next big "revolution" was ERP, CRM, cloud, etc.

Those who track the online discourse on enterprise social media are surely aware that the trough of disillusionment is likely at hand. Yet the dreaded industry trough, brought about by the over-heated promises and inflated expectations bandied about from just about every quarter?including thought leaders, journalists, vendors, and yes, even end-users themselves? is considered a largely inevitable step in the process of maturity of any new technology.
