?

campy
adj. being so extreme that it has an amusing and perversely sophisticated appeal.
? UrbanDictionary.com

How does the definition apply to Venture Theatre?s production of the Tony award-winning musical, Avenue Q?

T?was amusing. (I laughed out loud!)
T?was extreme. (This is not a PC show!)
T?was perverse. (There?s muppet sexuality)
T?was sophisticated. (In fact, I would definitely leave the kiddos at home!)
T?was appealing! (I really enjoyed it!)

So, what exactly IS Avenue Q, you ask?

In a nutshell, it?s a fresh, fun, musical comedy which checks political correctness at the door. It is like Sesame Street for adults, with South Park humor, a live-action-production-meets-puppet show where the characters are exploring race, relationships, sexuality, life purpose and other post-modern issues. And this particular production of Avenue Q is worth seeing for all of the above reasons, but more so for the talented cast and crew and the local flavor sprinkled in for good mix.

What are some of the highlights (without spoilers!)?

? By seeing this musical comedy, you are helping to support a great local cause: Venture, ?A 20 Year Adventure in Innovative Theatre? (and my old stomping grounds).
? The directorial prowess of Lynn Al shines in the creative choices, brush-up with the third wall and local content.
? A great cast: Gustavo Balotta, Wendy Carlin, Vanessa Dent, Christopher Jennings, Sofia Gomez Lohrenz, Kevin B. Schweigert, Chaslee Schweitzer, Andrew Seeman and Danielle Turtainen.
? Promiscuous puppetry! This includes the vocal talents, facial expressions, hand gestures and physicality of the versatile actors piloting them and interacting with them.
? Excellent musical elements! This includes musical direction by Cassidy Gamsby Seeman, actor singing talent and a live band.
? A very friendly, accommodating and efficient box office experience ? thank you, Patrick Wilson!

Anything else you care to share with the world regarding this production, Ange?

Yes!
1. While in the restroom at intermission, I witnessed a woman washing her hands and exuberantly humming the last number to the first act. She was really enjoying herself. I got a kick out of her!
2. As my friend and I were walking down Montana Avenue towards the parking place after the show, we were discussing our favorite puppets/actor in the show. We both liked the actor who played the puppets of Nicky and Trekkie Monster (Andrew Seeman). My friend enjoyed Nicky best because of his extremely expressive green hands and I liked Trekkie Monster best for two reasons: a) his deep, grumbly voice and b) the character is the epitome of the id in all of us.
3. My favorite musical number was ?The Internet is for Porn.? You must see the show to find out why.
4. However, I most identified with the song, ?There is Life Outside Your Apartment? because I am more than a homebody ? I am an introvert that borders on the precipice of shut-in at times!
5. I must be really hardcore, because I don?t believe I blushed even once during the show.

Finally, your conclusion?

Well, what are you waiting for!?! Go see it! Get out of the house, exercise your id, stretch your laugh muscles and prepare for a campy good time!
