Trailer Countdown 2/15: ?The Company You Keep,? ?Monsters University? & More

This week on the trailer report, we?re taking a different approach ? ranking the trailers from best to worst.

It?s all too easy to throw a collection of trailers together and call them all equal, but we all know they?re not. There?s some good, some bad and some merely middling, but it?s time they stand up and account for themselves, allowing us to judge them accordingly and award them a ranking.

We?ve quite the diversity this week, from the Robert Redford thriller ?The Company You Keep,? and a British suspense film starring Clive Owen, on down to much less desirable fare such as the Green Day documentary ?Broadway Idiot.? So settle in, and take a long hard look at what the film industry has offered up this week.

1.) ?The Company You Keep?

Annnnd, we have a winner! An investigative reporter turns up more dirt than he meant to about a long dormant case, eventually wreaking havoc on the lives of everyone involved. ?The Company You Keep? wins the inaugural Trailer of the Week, as it looks absolutely phenomenal overall, has an outstanding cast (including the amazingly talented Brit Marling!) and an ostensibly terrific plot. This is one well done trailer to boot, though it may give away a tad too much information. Suspense, thrills and a few twists? What?s not to love!

2.) ?Shadow Dancer?

Another thriller that puts Clive Owen at the forefront of danger and highlights the outstanding Andrea Riseborough? Sign me up. This movie focuses in on the ?90s IRA movement and a member who must turn on her organization to save her own life. Heartbreaking and brutal.

3.) ?Mental?

In this Australian comedy, a strange woman becomes nanny to an entire brood of zany girls after their own mother goes to the loony bin. Toni Collette does ?crazy? so well, and this one looks like a barrel of fun with plenty of witty dialogue and heartfelt truths throughout.

4.) ?The Numbers Station?

A former black ops specialist is sent in to protect a young woman with a unique job: Generating codes for secret agents around the world to utilize in their missions. This preview combines the romanticism of old world technology with the fast-paced action of today, and while it may all end up where we think it will, there?s still plenty left unsaid by this enigmatic trailer.

5.) ?Writers?

A successful writer attempts to get over his divorce while giving his aspiring writer children advice in this coming of age dramedy. It looks like pretty typical fare; people will learn things, kids will grow up, hearts will be broken and mended, but I?m giving it more than the benefit of the doubt due to the involvement of Kristen Bell, Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Connelly.

6.) ?The Internship?

Two out of work funny slacker guys get themselves an internship at Google. They are woefully out of place. This might be the longest Google ad ever made, and also the worst movie ever. I?m giving it a higher rank because I know other people are huge Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson fans, but the pairing is so not my cup of tea. Rose Byrne, you beautiful flower, why are you in this!? Dumb jokes and a dumb premise make for a dumb movie.

7.) ?One Direction 3-D?

Everything you ever wanted to know and much more about One Direction! ?You know, that boy band from England? Aw yeah. While this may seem hokey and ridiculous, it also seems as if it might be a lot of fun. I scoffed heartily at the Justin Bieber and Katy Perry documentaries, and lo and behold I actually really enjoyed them. While it?s not my style of music, a look behind the scenes is always fascinating.

8.) ?Down and Dangerous?

Drugs, smuggling, gunshots, this trailer is almost a bit of a snoozefest except that it still feels original, as if it?s operating outside the normal Hollywood realm. I?m interested to see it despite the almost lame trappings, and giving it a higher rank due to technical proficiency. Gotta take a chance now and then, y?know?

9.) ?Monsters University?

The latest from Pixar is finally here. We?re treated to a look back at the early origins of our favorite ?Monsters, Inc.? characters. It could be good, but the more I think about it, the more cautious my optimism becomes. Oh heck, I?m actually pretty excited about this one as it?s not quite a sequel and not quite a re-hashing of old material.

10.) ?The Sapphires?

Funnyman Chris O?Dowd assumes the role of manager and band leader to a group of Australian girls who take their singing act on the road to Vietnam during the late ?60s. While this trailer makes it all seem very by-the-book and predictable, there?s a certain charm and delight that we can still expect from this indie gem, which premiered to rather positive reviews at last year?s Cannes Film Festival.

11.) ?Hours?

Super-hottie Paul Walker holds together this harrowing thriller that focuses on one father?s efforts to keep his infant daughter alive in the midst of a horrible natural disaster. This one looks solid, though it could fail in the details. I?m withholding judgement until I get more of a peek at this one, but it looks as if it could be both heartwarming and thrilling.

12.) ?Broadway Idiot?

Ugh, I am having trouble imagining anything worse than a look behind the scenes of a Broadway show I hope to never see, about a band that has totally lost all relevance or interest for most people. But here?s a feature-length documentary about the making of Green Day?s ?American Idiot? Broadway show. Looks to be train-wrecky ? I don?t wanna stare, but I still can?t look away.

13.) ?Lumpy?

Justin Long does his level best to hold together a comedy about the death of a friend and a new couple looking for the meaning of life in the aftermath, but this strange independent film feels very flat, even in the trailer.

14.) ?Come Out and Play?

Uhh, well, the lesson of the day is: Don?t get trapped in a town populated by murderous children hell-bent on killing all the adults. This hokey mess wins our first Worst Trailer of the Week award, and this movie looks painful, pointless and just plain awful.
